The little shop that could

You might think that ‘doing your little bit’ isn’t making a difference, but we’re proof that it really does!

Through our little store in Brisbane, My Green Stuff owner Tea Poulsen is helping our planet, and the community through a range of initiatives that focus on eco-friendly, sustainable outcomes.

And visitors to the store can also lend their support but taking part in these initiatives as well.

Aussie Breadtags for Wheelchairs Charity

You might have seen these wonderful bowls in our shop. They’re made from recycled bread tags, collected by us, and others around the country, and given a new lease on life by Australian company Transmutation.

But it’s not as simple as all that!

We collect the tags in store as they’re dropped off by customers. We then bundle them up and take them to a courier just near the airport, who, for free, transports them to Aussie Breadtags for Wheelchairs in South Australia.

There, they are sorted, by colour, but a group of wonderful volunteers. Generally elderly, and suffering from dementia, this group enjoy the process of sorting tags either at home or catching up together. Those tags are then sold to Transmutation, who give them a new lease on life as bowls and other products.

But what does this have to do with wheelchairs? Well, the money raised by selling the sorted tags is used to purchase wheelchairs for disadvantaged people, mainly in South Africa! So it really is a worldwide operation.

In fact, through our store alone we estimate we’ve collected enough tags to purchase 6-8 wheelchairs. At 200-250kg of tags per chair that’s a lot of tags!

It’s an amazing story, born out of a humble little bread tag.

Share the Dignity

Share the Dignity is a well-known Australian charity focused on ending period poverty. They do this by distributing period products to those experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or doing it tough.

My Green Stuff acts as a collection point twice a year, in April and August, for those who would like to contribute by dropping off period products. We then make sure they find their way to Share the Dignity, and in turn to those who need them most.

Friends with Dignity

If you shop at the major supermarkets, you might have noticed that they periodically have promotions where you can collect points, and turn them into free products such as bowls, saucepans, frypans, knives etc.

Often we find that customers end up with a pile of these at the end of the promotion, but don’t really have a need for them.

Through our work with Friends with Dignity, we act as a collection point for these items, ensuring they are then used in the set up of new homes for those fleeing domestic violence.

In fact, it goes further than that. For many years, Tea has been a volunteer, working with this organisation to help set up these sanctuaries. Volunteers, such as Tea, would receive the keys to a home and within a week have created a beautiful space, filled with pre-used and new household items, ready to welcome someone who needs it most.

It’s a very personal service too. The volunteers are given information on the family that will receive the home such as their kid’s favourite colour or toy, and do their best to create an amazing space from which they can start to rebuild their lives.

Collecting your recyclables

When you visit our little shop, the first thing you see as you come in the door is an array of boxes, acting as collection points for a range of recyclables.

It’s an easy way for you to reduce your contribution to landfill – all you have to do is make sure they are nice and clean and drop them off when you pop in! Items we collect include:

  •        Plastic tops from milk bottles and soft drink bottles CLEAN/RINSE
  •          Blister packs
  •          Toothpaste tubes (cut in half and rinsed) and caps
  •          Floss containers
  •          Toothbrushes and interdental brushes
  •          Electric toothbrush heads
  •          Colgate RecyClean Toothbrushes
  •          Pens, felt tips, fountain pens and ink cartridges
  •          Highlighters and markers
  •          Mechanical pencils
  •          Correction tape and fluid pots
  •          Reading glasses

We’d love your support with any of these initiatives, and we love to spread the word too so feel free to have a chat when you come in store.
