You might be wondering why we decided to use the words ‘invest in’ rather than buy in the title of this blog post.
Well, that’s because we think choosing to purchase a sustainable product can be an investment. It’s an investment because it could be something you use for years, rather than consume once and throw away, but it’s also an investment in our planet and in our future.
And what exactly do we mean by ‘eco-friendly’? It’s a term that we see a lot these days, but to us it means that it’s designed to have little or no damaging effect on the environment. That could be because it’s made from recycled materials, or it could be because it can be recycled, (or both), or it could be made using sustainable materials or in a sustainable way.
Of course it’s not just the product itself that is ‘eco-friendly’. It’s the fact that by buying a sustainable product you’re not buying a whole lot of unsustainable products. For example, by buying one reusable water bottle, you’re no longer buying many single-use water bottles.
Here’s some products that often are used every day we think fit the ‘eco-friendly’ tag.
Reusable water bottles – We’re sure you don’t need us to tell you that single-use water bottles are a huge issue for our planet. Yes, you can recycle them and get 10c back, but there’s no escaping the fact that that water bottle, or the plastic it is made from now exists in one form or another until long after we’re gone. How about we forgo the 10c and buy a water bottle that we can use again and again instead?
Reusable produce bags – We’re all very good at taking our bags to the supermarket to bring our groceries home, but not many of us take our own bags to put our produce in at the start of our shop. Plastic bags for fruit and vegetables generally get thrown out once you’ve consumed the contents, so avoid that waste by taking your own reusable produce bags instead.
Environmentally-friendly cleaning products – Unless you’re a scientist, reading the back of a bottle of cleaning products can be a bit like trying to read something in another language. So many different chemicals all in one bottle! Of course, once you’ve used them these chemicals end up in our waterways as we wash our dishes and floors and clean our clothes. Environmentally-friendly alternatives are not only just as effective, they’re kinder to the environment and our skin and often smell amazing too!
Reusable straws – Thankfully governments are catching up on this one and realising that single-use straws are terrible for our environment! You know commonly find paper straws, which are better, but let’s face it, paper and liquid really don’t go together too well. The answer – BYO reusable straw. Choose from a range of sizes and materials such as silicone or stainless steel so you always have a straw to hand.
Reusable cutlery – Paper definitely isn’t going to cut it here in the way it has helped as a solution for straws! Go to any food court in the country and you can imagine how many sets of single use cutlery they go through! With your own set to hand you’ll be able to eat your takeaway lunch without needing to throw out your fork, knife, spoon, or chopsticks at the end of it.
We’re really only scratching the surface here – there are so many ways you can invest in eco-friendly products as you invest in the future of our planet. Browse our website to find more ideas!
